Anyone can fulfil their dreams for a successful career if they are determined to do so.  This however calls for stepping out of your comfort zone.

One of the most affirmed ways of growing a career is through networking. Meeting and connecting with the right people matters for business, but trouble comes in knowing the right places to meet them.

Here is a list of some places one can engage in for the purpose of networking;

Workplace

Judith Uwimana, an IT expert, says that working with people that push you to be better, and learn from your mistakes can assist you in growing.

For her, it’s best to get a mentor at work, as they will push you to leave your comfort zone, offer advice based on their more advanced knowledge or experience, and help with setting goals and giving feedback.

Uwimana also adds that your co-workers can be your motivation as they push you to do better and provide you with the support you need during tough times. "But it starts with how you treat them. Being friendly helps people like you and even feel comfortable to provide any kind of advice.”

Seminars and trainings

"Never underestimate these platforms. They not only equip you with knowledge but also connect you with people in the same field who can assist you in furthering your education, connect you to job opportunities and so forth. If your job doesn’t provide employees with seminar opportunities, you can look for them yourself,” she says.

Advanced courses

For her, taking on other extra courses not only helps you learn more, it’s a means to meet new people. Some can even mentor you to be good at what you do. Such people can empower you to use your talents to the maximum and assist in identifying what you’re good at and help you develop it even further.

Organisations or clubs

The IT expert explains that clubs or organisations are places you’re assured of meeting people with the same values as yours. They can even inspire you to start your own club.

Public places

Uwimana believes that you can even meet people in public places like coffee shops and libraries. Some strangers can turn into business partners, employers, motivation friends and so much more.

Public speaking events

According to Indeed Career Guide, public speaking events are another great networking opportunity for professionals. Events with a line-up of public speakers can give you a chance to learn about new topics or issues in your profession. The speakers at these events can be great additions to your professional network. You can also meet other professionals who attend these events.

Cultural events

"You can also grow your professional network while you enjoy events in your community. You can learn about other cultures at events like symphony performances and art exhibits. Many people at community events have day jobs in industries that may be related to your own. Also, attending cultural events can allow you to connect with other attendees.”

Online communities

Emmanuel Rwozi, a customer service manager in Kigali says that with the pandemic, connecting with people online is the way to go. With advanced technology, he says, you can connect with people around the world. For instance, by joining blogs, that way, you can find mentors and career partners.

Families

"Surprisingly, some family members can assist in your job hunt, that’s if you open up to them about the kind of help you need. They can connect you to organisations that are in line with what you studied. Even if someone is to put a good word for you, don’t make their work hard, just make sure you’re qualified for the job,” he says.
