Over 5,000 students graduated in 2009

KIGALI - A total of 5,119 students are reported to have graduated in various disciplines this year across all universities in the country according to a statement from the Ministry of Education.

KIGALI - A total of 5,119 students are reported to have graduated in various disciplines this year across all universities in the country according to a statement from the Ministry of Education.

Among these 1,779 were females and 3,344 males, which, according to the statement, is an indication of improvement in the level of females completing school as compared to the previous years.

Also this year saw 122 students graduating with Master’s Degrees.

In a phone interview with the ministry’s spokesperson Emile Ruberwa, he revealed that in general this year’s performance improved compared to the previous years, adding that the increased female numbers among graduates depict the impact of the girl child education programme.

Among the graduates, 14 got First Class Degrees; three from the National University of Rwanda (NUR), one from KIST, one from the School of Finance and Banking (SFB), six came from KHI.  Three came from Kigali Independent University (ULK).

In this year’s graduation NUR fronted 1,452 graduates, KIST 173, SFB 335, 625 from KIE, 279 from KHI, 918 from ISAE and 1,337 from ULK.

According to available statistics, some of the graduates this year have joined the private sector to start up small entrepreneurial ventures.

There are also others who have enrolled for other life skills courses like e-Health Software Development and Implementation (EHSDI) which is conducted by the Rwanda Information Technology Authority (RDB/RITA), which trains people in the use of medical software and programmes.
