Local artists Friday staged a show at Petit Stade in Remera and donated all the gate collections the One Dollar Campaign. The campaign is geared at constructing shelter for orphans of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

"We are really happy about the way our local artists have supported this project. Staging a show in the name of raising funds to construct houses for our orphans is a signal that they care and are involved in the process of improving the welfare of those who were made vulnerable by the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi,” said Robert Masozera.

Masozera is the Director General of the Diaspora in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The One Dollar Campaign falls in his portfolio.

He said that this show was timely as holiday makers would pass the message to their parents and teachers when they returned to school.

"As a result, it is expected that the parents and teachers will also rally their support to this cause.”

Eric Senderi, in the middle of his performance said that the orphans went through a lot and it was sad to see that they are still hurting. He called upon everyone to rally their support behind the One Dollar Campaign.

Masozera also rebuffed rumours circulating that the organisers of the campaign have already started misusing the collected funds. He said that the funds are well managed and accounted for and that everything is done transparently.

"We are happy with the progress. People are responding positively and we are managing the funds properly as opposed to those who say we are misusing them. Those are people who are trying to fail us but we shall continue.”

Entrance fee for the concert was Rwf 2000 and Rwf3000 for VIPs. The money collected at the concert which was attended to full capacity amounted to Rwf1.2 million.

At the launch of the campaign, over USD 50,000 was realised.
