Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Basketball Club Power forward Olivier Shyaka posted a game high 30 points as his team overcame defending champions Patriots 66-63 in game 1 of the best-of-three playoff finals on Friday, October 29 at Kigali Arena.

The match that was highly contested, due to among other reasons, the fact that the champion will represent Rwanda in the Basketball Africa League (BAL), an NBA-sponsored club championship that takes place annually on the African continent since 2021.

Henry Mwinuka’s REG started with a great performance, winning the first quarter 25-18, but Patriots bounced to claim the second quarter 11-8.

By half-time, REG was holding a narrow 33-29 lead.

Returning for the second half, Patriots continued to put up a fight, winning the third quarter 19-18, and drawing the fourth one 15-15 points.

Besides Shyaka's scoring exploits for REG, fellow players Elie Kaje and Pascal Niyonkuru added 12 and 7 points respectively.

For Patriots, Kenneth Gasana dropped 21 points and Dieudonné Ndizeye added 14.

Mwinuka said the win is a good step forward, and a boost for them.

"This is a very good step forward, winning the first game of the series is always a massive boost,” he said.

In the women's category, REG women basketball also increased their chances of winning the title after beating defending champions The Hoops on 74-47 points in the first game of the best-of-three playoff finals

The second games of the playoff finals are slated for today, October 30.
