KICUKIRO - Members of staff of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) held a debate about ways to fight the Genocide ideology on Thursday at Kigali International Airport on Wednesday.

In attendance were CAA staff members and representatives from different services that operate at the Airport.

During the event, the Director General of CAA, Richard Masozera, encouraged them to reintegrate and live together as Rwandans.

"This is our way of commemorating the Genocide. The airport like any other organization lost people to the Genocide and we just wanted to bring together our staff so that they can be briefed on fighting the ideology that led to the Genocide,” said Richard Mugisha who is in charge of operations at the airport.

The debate was presided over by the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for the Fight against Genocide, Jean de Dieu Mucyo, who encouraged the staff to equip themselves with our country’s history and to discourage the ideology.

"We need to equip ourselves with knowledge of our history so that we can fight together the Genocide ideology. The youth make up 67 percent of our population, so we need to teach them why the Genocide should never happen again because they are tomorrow’s leaders,” said Mucyo.

He led them through the circumstances that led to the Genocide against Tutsi, saying that all this information will be documented and stored at Nyanza Memorial Site library where the public can visit and read through.

Camille Kanamugire, a senior supervisor at the airport said that plans were underway to renovate a memorial site at the airport to accommodate the remains of 26 victims.

Kanamugire remarked that debates to counter the Genocide ideology should be carried out across the country because all citizens need to be informed of our country’s history and path to renewal.

CAA staff members plan to visit Ntarama Memorial Site in the Eastern Province later this month.
