Champions League
Saturday APR 1-1
APR FC were left frustrated after being held to a 1-1 draw by Etoile Sportive du Sahel of Tunisia in the second round of this year’s CAF Champions League first leg match at Kigali Stadium on Saturday.
The visitors opened the scoring early on in the third minute through Tayeb Meziani before APR's attacking midfielder Djabel Manishimwe equalized for the hosts in the 41st minute.
In a game in, which they created so many chances, the military side could live to regret the missed goal-scoring opportunities if they fail to get beyond this stage, and this left Moroccan coach Mohamed Errade Adil disappointed.
The military side continued to press the visitors and skipper Jacques Tuyisenge wasted good scoring opportunities.
Manishimwe came close and had his shot brushed off the target after a swift counterattack initiated by Gilbert Mugisha.
The Amavubi midfielder Manishimwe, who was a constant threat to the ESS backline, dribbled from the centre half into the goal area only to chip an aerial ball that Tuyisenge headed wide.
At this point, the Tunisians seemed only contented with not conceding another goal opting for a draw for most of the match. They got their own scoring opportunities from counterattacks.
In the second half, the visitors defended in numbers and APR was even hungrier for a second goal but lady luck never smiled for them.
APR coach, Errade Adil tried to spice up the attack bringing in the duo of Yves Mugunga and Innocent Nshuti for Gilbert Mugisha and injured Tuyisenge.
The changes did little as the score remained the same, but APR remained livelier but didn't cause any trouble to the Tunisian goalkeeper.
