Gicumbi FC were on Friday, October 15, crowned champions of the second division league after beating Etoile de l’Est on penalties (14-13) after the two teams were tied to a 2-2 draw in a final held at Amahoro Stadium.
The two top flight league newcomers squared off to decide who should be crowned champions of the second division league after eliminating Heroes FC and Amagaju FC in the semi-finals on Tuesday, October 12, to progress to the final and book a ticket to the top flight league.
Striker Claude Mudahemuka put Etoile de l’Est ahead with a fine strike after 28 minutes before Bertin Dusange converted the penalty for Gicumbi to put his side ahead before both teams went for a halftime break.
The champions took the lead thanks to Kevin Lulu Okenge within 17 minutes of the second half and the striker thought his goal was enough to inspire his side to the league title until Etoile de l’Est’s Boniface Gahamanyi cancelled the lead with a a last-minute goal to force the teams take penalties which ended in Gicumbi FC’s favor.
Meanwhile, Heroes FC took the third place after beating Amagaju FC on 5-4 penalties after the match between both teams ended 1-1.
