EASTERN PROVINCE

RWAMAGANA — A delegation from the European Union (EU) and the World Bank (WB) on Wednesday, visited they fund projects in the Rwamagana District, in order to assess their implementation.

The projects are funded through the Common Development Fund (CDF).

Led by Leatitie Nkunda from CDF, they inspected a health centre under construction in the Gahengeri Sector, the Rwamagana market and Agahozo Shaloom, an orphanage in Rubona sector unit.

Gahengeri residents currently trek a distance of over five kilometres to reach the nearest health centres, in Musha and Nzige sectors. Once completed, the new health centre is expected to help over 17,000 people.

According to Nkunda, the visit aimed at assessing the progress of activities funded by EU member countries, through CDF in the district.

Speaking to the visitors, Valens Ntezirembo, the Mayor, explained that the area residents choose the projects they want to be implemented, depending on their most pressing needs.

People’s views concerning development activities, he said, are written down and incorporated in the general District Development Plan.

The visitors also visited residents neighbouring Ntunga market, to assess the impact of electricity on their economic activities and welfare.

At the orphanage, the care takers thanked the visiting officials for the funds, which were used to construct the centre.  The visiting members hailed the orphanage officials for looking after the orphans.

The market, local leaders said, has helped to raise district revenue through taxation, and this helps the district to initiate more development projects.

The delegation acknowledged the importance of the market to the residents, pointing out that traders carry out their businesses without fear of being interrupted by rain.

They were expected to visit other EU/WB funded projects in the districts of Kayonza, Ngoma, Gatsibo and Nyagatare.
