FOR CLOSE TO A YEAR NOW, since he released his debut album ‘Confusing Solution’ in late 2020, Lil K HPB had not released a single. But the Canada-based singer, real name Owen Berel Karagira, has returned to the music scene with a new song ‘La La’ which he hopes will see his career make impressive progress.
Loosely translated as right now, ‘Lala’ is a slang used in Montreal where Lil K is pursuing his music career.
‘La La’ is inspired by a story which involves a situation where, in the video, Lil K, while having fun with friends at a party, meets a beautiful girl who was out with her boyfriend at the same place.
The girl gets excited about the singer and eventually feels her boyfriend is no longer her type since she has met someone more suitable. Lil K HPB tries to impress and convince her that she would get everything she wants if she chooses to stay with him right away.
The audio of the song was produced by Producer Element while the vocals were taken in Canada, Ottawa by producer Kenibi, who has made a name for himself thanks to making a number of hits for the Canadian Diaspora.
The video was shot and directed by local video director Pacifique Cyusa who had previously been involved in directing songs for home-grown upcoming musicians.
‘La La’ becomes Lil K’s very first release since he relocated with his family to Montreal, Canada, early this year.
"I can’t say that this is a comeback. I haven’t been releasing a song for some time because I wanted to spare time for people who love my music to listen to my album,” Lil K told The New Times in an interview.
"I have more music projects that might be released any time after my new song,” he added.
Before shifting to Canada, Lil K was doing music at Green Ferry Music, whose recording studio would help him in the production and distribution of his music on different platforms worldwide.
Green Ferry had their work cut short after the singer left Rwanda to continue his music in Canada where his family currently resides.
The recording studio has, however, been supporting him in the distribution of his music.
Born in Burundi and raised in Rwanda, Lil K HPB knew he would become a musician at the age of 14 and recorded his first single ‘Seen’ in 2018, aged just 17.
The song was recorded and produced at Green Ferry Music under which he saw his career grow alongside the likes of rapper Bushali, B-Threy, Icenova, Amalon and Kaya Byinshi among others.
His career has since been on an upward trajectory. At the end of October 2020, Lil K was named as one of the 18 semi-finalists for the ‘Take Back the Mic’ hip hop competition that featured participants from different countries including Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa.
