All the 27 juveniles who sat for the national examinations passed, with four from O’Level passing in first division.

Out of the 27 candidates, 23 were PLE candidates and 15 of them passed in first division while the rest were in second division.

The exam results were released on Monday.

While commenting on the way forward following the exams results, SSP Pelly Uwera Gakwaya, the Spokesperson for Rwanda Correctional Services, said they will wait for the President's decision.

"For now we don’t know what is next,” Gakwaya said. "We can only wait."

She added that in previous years juvenile inmates who passed national exams were eventually released to return to school through a presidential pardon. 

Gakwaya noted that this year's performance of incarcerated children in national examinations reflected previous trends. 

"They always perform well but now we thank God that they have all passed and are happy for them,” she said. 

Asked about the reasons behind the success, she said the students had enough time to revise, through past papers, and their teachers always helped them. 

All juvenile candidates were boys.

More than 60,000 students failed PLE and O' Level exams and are required to repeat their grades following the termination of the automatic promotion policy.
