Rwanda Energy Group women basketball have set themselves a target of winning the national basketball league title this season.
Having introduced both men's basketball and volleyball teams for the past five and three seasons respectively, REG has added a women’s franchise in its books after reaching a three-year agreement to rebrand Ubumwe Basketball Club into REG Women Basketball team.
The team won matches against the Hoops and APR last weekend to go fourth with 11 points.
Club head coach, Esperance Mukaneza, told Times Sport that she is confident she can guide REG to their first league title this year as the club seeks to dominate the local women’s basketball.
"The focus is to do better than last season, which means challenging for the league title,” she said.
"We have everything to win the title. We know other teams are also preparing well and have similar ambitions, but we hope the new signings can make a difference. We look forward to a successful campaign,” she added.
As part of rebuilding the team, the club has signed Tierra Monay Henderson, the captain of the women's basketball team, and Muganza Nyota Mireille, who plays for the national team of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Meanwhile, in the men’s category, REG extended their lead at the top of Group B table after beating APR 64-61 on Saturday night, while Patriots remain top of Group A despite falling to a surprise defeat to IPRC-Kigali 76-69.
