Where the rhythm of words meets the beat of social change, Rwandan professional poet Sylvestre Nsengimana stands out as a beacon of artistic innovation and advocacy. The 31-year-old has carved a unique niche in the world of performing arts, channeling his talents towards fostering a vibrant cultural landscape for the youth of Rwanda.
A University of Rwanda graduate in the class of 2016, Nsengimana’s journey from student to luminary in the arts has been marked by a steadfast commitment to his vision (a flourishing industry where young performers can thrive).
His dream, rooted in his own childhood aspirations, materialized in January 2018 by founding of ‘UMUT Arts’.

This company was not just a platform for artistic expression, but a mission-driven enterprise aimed at educating, entertaining, and empowering the youth to believe in their capabilities.
Through UMUT Arts, Nsengimana also seeks to raise awareness about mental health, using the arts as a therapeutic and enlightening tool.
One of Nsengimana&039;s notable contributions is the initiation of the Rwanda Theater Festival, an annual event that leverages the UMUT Arts platform to showcase local talent and foster collaboration among artists. This festival has become a cornerstone for the performing arts community in Rwanda, offering a stage for young performers to shine and connect with seasoned professionals.
"My love and passion for poetry drive me to champion it wholeheartedly. Poetry, for me, is more than just an art form, it is a powerful tool for communication and healing. When you love something deeply, you invest your entire self into it, striving to perfect your craft and make a meaningful impact,” he told The New Times.
Nsengimana's dedication to his craft and his community extends beyond the borders of Rwanda. His participation in international forums and workshops underscores his commitment to continuous learning and sharing knowledge in the poem industry.
In 2020, he attended the ‘Writing Theater for Young Audiences’ workshop by Unga Klara in Sweden, an experience that enriched his approach to creating impactful narratives for young people.
He also honed his skills in film production and management through a UNESCO program and participated in cultural management training by Africalia Belgium and the African Management Institute in 2021.
The poet’s ecological engagement was highlighted in 2022 when he took part in the 'Ou Atterrir' project by Theatre de La Poudrerie in France. This project emphasized the intersection of arts and environmental advocacy, reflecting Nsengimana's belief in the power of art to address global challenges.
Another notable work by Nsengimana is his book of poetry, 'Urugendo' (The Journey), which delves into the rich tapestry of Rwandan arts and cultural norms. This 159-page collection is divided into five chapters, which the author metaphorically refers to as 'rooms.'
The first room, 'Icyumba Cyo Kubaho' (Room of Existence), features 12 poems that introduce readers to Nsengimana's craft through reflections on life and existence. Among the standout pieces in this chapter is the titular poem 'Urugendo' (Journey), which serves as an encouragement to commitment.
Another notable poem, 'Imvune z’Umuhanzi' (The Struggles of an Artist), highlights the challenges faced by artists in general.
The other rooms in the collection include the Room of Drama, Room of Legacy, Room of Gospel, and the Room of Love. Each room explores different themes and showcases Nsengimana’s versatility as a poet, making 'Urugendo' a comprehensive and compelling exploration of Rwandan life and artistry.
In 2023, Nsengimana contributed to the book project 'Les Plumes, Semeuses de Paix,' which was presented to the public of Bukavu during a literary conference held at the French Institute in South-Kivu, DRC. This collaborative work, authored by 24 writers from Burundi, Rwanda, and the DR Congo, explores themes of peace and social cohesion among communities.
In 2024, Nsengimana unveiled his debut poetry extended play (EP) titled ‘Mu Rwanda,’ a celebration of Rwanda, its culture, and lifestyle. The EP features four poems: Seruka Nyampinga, Mu Rwanda (featuring Carine Poet and Ferdinand Munezero), Amajwi y’i Rwanda, and Imitoma.
‘Mu Rwanda’ stands out for its unique blend of contemporary vibes while preserving the authenticity of traditional poetry. The title reflects the central theme of capturing the essence of Rwanda through artistic expression.
Recognition of his impact came in the form of being named among 100 global artist change-makers by Artlink Switzerland, an accolade that celebrates his contributions to using art as a vehicle for social transformation.
Nsengimana's journey is a testament to the transformative power of arts. His work continues to inspire and empower, driving a cultural renaissance in Rwanda and beyond.

Through his visionary leadership and his unwavering dedication to nurturing young talent, Nsengimana is not only shaping the future of Rwandan performing arts but also using his poetic voice to advocate for a better, more inclusive world.
So far, he said, the poetry industry is showing great promise as the audience has grown significantly and is much more engaged compared to the past.
However, he claimed that there is still a pressing need for more support from investors and media houses.
"Their involvement is crucial to investing in and showcasing these talents, just as they do for other forms of art. With their backing, we can further elevate the industry and provide poets with the recognition and platforms they deserve,” he said.
