Rwanda off to winning start in Volleyball Africa Championship

Rwanda started their campaign at the 2021 Africa men's volleyball championship with victory after defeating Burundi 3-0 at the Kigali Arena.

Paulo de Tarso’s side collected the win as they powered past Burundi in three (3-0) sets 25-15, 25-19 and 25-17. The match was attended by several officials, including President Paul Kagame.

"It is always good to start with a win. We played with discipline and determination. Now we need to quickly shift focus to our next game against Burkina Faso," Paulo de Tarso said in a post-game interview.

Ethiopia, Cameroon, Uganda and Mali and Uganda also won their respective matches. Uganda defeated Burkina Faso 3-1 (3-1, 25-15, 25-18, 26-28 and 25-13) in the first game of the day.

Two times champions Cameroon beat DR Congo 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-15 and 25-17).

Ethiopia also beat South Sudan 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 21-25 and 15-9) in a thrilling match.

Mali beat Niger in five thrilling sets, Niger won the first two sets with (25-21, 25-22) while Niger came back strong to win the third set 31-29, and it was again Mali that won the fourth set with 26-24 to go for tiebreak before winning the game 15-13.

For the second day of the tournament, Niger will be up against RDC, Tunisia will play against Ethiopia, who won their first game against South Sudan.

Nigeria will be up against South Sudan, Mali and Cameroon will be vying for a second win while Morocco will play against Tanzania and Egypt will play against Kenya.
