MUHANGA — a  survivor who spoke at the Kabgayi genocide memorial recalled the utterances made by the Interahamwe militias during the time they went about slaughtering the Tutsi in  Gitarama.

Alexia Murorerwa, 38, who lost her husband, said that she sought refugee at the ADEPR Nyabisindu church parish and the church leaders did nothing to save escapees from the wrath of Interahmwe whom she singled out their leaders with their first names as  Paul and "Professor”.

According to Murorerwa, the two prominent killers had controlled the whole area  of Biti village and used very abusive language as they went about slaughtering Tutsi  at the church grounds. They hurled abuses at Tutsi as they awaited their fate.

She recalled that the two said that,  "let’s kill them starting off with men; and send them back to their origin in Ethiopia, since they are intruders.”

Murorerwa also narrated the manner in which her husband died and how she escaped death.

"The killers demanded that my husband pays for his dear life,” Murorerwa recalled. "He refused to pay and in retaliation to his refusal he was clubbed  to death.”

She recalled that she escaped after a disagreement erupted among the killers on sharing of the money some Tutsi paid to be spared.

"The killers began fighting each other and in the ensuing confusion we managed to escape to Kabgayi church grounds,” she concluded.

However she said that the Killings continued until the RPF took over Kabgayi.
