Derrick Don Divin Irambona has advanced from making covers of Rwandan oldies (Karahanyuze) to producing songs through Don Legacy, a music studio he opened in March 2021.
He produces music in close collaboration with his director, Alviz Organ from Alviz Pictures and has worked with different artistes like Marius Bison, D Poly, Jouese from Canada, Denise from USA, and Christian from Dubai to mention a few.
Derrick was been a DJ for five years in different high schools like TTC Save and Byimana School of Sciences, an experience he says is what inspired him start producing music. According to him, his skills have advanced because he can now produce standard products.
The zealous musician is known for covering ‘karahanyuze’ songs such as Gikundiro/Nyamibwa y'Igikundiro by François Nkurunziza and Ntacica Nk'irungu by Canjo Ammis where he uses guitar and piano.
He shares that he loved this particular kind of music because of how beautifully composed they were and began doing covers for them.
"I noticed that these songs were fading with time and I decided to do something so that people could enjoy them again. That's how I found myself covering them and I really appreciate the way people enjoyed my work,” he said.
His singing talent came from his parents, having also been singers in their earlier years. He started writing songs in 2008 when he was in primary schoos but released his first in 2012.
For him, music has greatly contributed to the person that he is today.
"Through music, I found myself and endless joy. Music gave me real friends and people that changed my life. Today, I have fans from different corners of the world and they really enjoy what I do. I adore seeing them enjoying my music. It is a piece of my dream that came true,” he said.
"Apart from gaining friends and happiness, I also get some money from music and I own a music studio and can now visualize my dreams clearly.”
His first song is called ‘Population’ and his current original song is called ‘Urubavu.’
Like many artistes, he still is still challenged by lack of sufficient capital to grow his music professionally and get power play on TV and radio stations.
However, he aims to upgrade his music and work more on the original songs he has written so that he can release his first album.
