It wasn’t a lucky night for Anita Kate Umuratwa who lost the Miss Supranational Global crown to Namibia's Chanique Rabe in a colorful grand finale held on Saturday, August 21, in Malopolska, Poland.

The Namibian became the 12th beauty queen to win the crown and the very first African to win it since the beauty contest’s inception in 2009.

Rwanda’s representative Umuratwa missed out not only on the crown but also in the top 24 overall finalists of the beauty contest despite trying her best to impress the jury throughout different sessions of the contest.

During the grand finale, Umuratwa showed up before the jury donned in umushanana (Rwandan traditional wear) and catwalked holding a small basket weaved and designed from Kigali Deaf Arts, a local art gallery founded by a group of eleven young people with speech impairment.

Despite losing the crown, the 20-year-old will return home proud of having at least used the global beauty contest as an opportunity to present to the world the beauty of her country, using a Visit Rwanda-inspired video, to give tourists from across the globe, reason why Rwanda should be their preferred tourism destination.

The video, in which many of her fellow contestants were involved with each saying ‘Visit Rwanda’, took social media by storm shortly after posting on her Instagram account a week ago.

People have since given her a vote of confidence and praised her successful efforts to engage fellow beauty queens to join her cause to encourage the world to visit Rwanda.

Umuratwa flew to Poland a fortnight ago aware that previous Rwandan beauty queens had been shy of winning the Miss Supranational global.

She did all she could to play her cards well to end the jinx but luck didn’t go her way after the jury chose Namibia’s Chanique Rabe as the winner.

Rabe succeeded Thailand’s Anntonia Porsild who held the crown for two years since she won it in 2019 after the 2020 edition was canceled due to the covid-19 pandemic.
