Kenya's national women team got their revenge over Rwanda after beating the hosts 79-52 in the semi-finals of the Women’s Afrobasket Zone 5 qualifiers to join Egypt in Saturday final at Kigali Arena.
The Kenyans started the qualifiers on a losing side following a 45-77 defeat against Rwanda in the opening game but bounced back with a powerful performance that saw them beat the hosts during the semi-final rematch on Friday.
They go head to head with an Egyptian side that defeated South Sudan 99-65 in another semi-final to maintain their unbeaten run since the tournament began on July 12. Raneem El Gedawy scored for game high 16 points for Egypt to increase her points tally in the tournament to 42.
The final game will decide which side, between Kenya and Egypt, will book a ticket to the 2021 Women’s Afrobasket finals scheduled from September 17-22, in Yaounde, Cameroon.
Egypt remain favourites but will be worried with the way Kenyans grew into the tournament, as the two sides were separated with just one point in a game that Egypt beat Kenya 107-106.
The tournament is being played behind closed doors under extraordinary conditions brought about by the raging Covid-19 pandemic which forced Rwanda to impose another lockdown in the City of Kigali and other eight districts upcountry.
The teams have been facing off in the Kigali Arena court with no beat of African drums or even a single vuvuzela bleat from supporters as they remain banned from attending the games.
Four nations Rwanda, Kenya, South Sudan and Egypt are participating in the qualifiers and only one ticket to Cameroon is up for grabs.
