Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) is to suspend ‘surtax’ on imported sugar by June, Deputy Commissioner General for Customs Services, Eugene Torero told Business Times. 

Suspension of surtax, a tax added to the normal tax paid by corporations or individuals, who have earned income above a certain level, will benefit those who import sugar as raw materials, but not for commercial purposes.

Companies such as Bralirwa and Inyange are likely to benefit from the tax exemption.

The tax was fixed at 25 per cent and it will be fixed at zero per cent for those who use it as raw materials. The tax was supposed to be scrapped in February but there were some reasons it was delayed.

Torero played down fears that there is a shortage of sugar in the country.

"We are not reprieving the surtax because the country is running short of sugar and for what ever case even people will still import, so there is no sugar shortage in the country,” he added.
