Cape Verde has joined hosts Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola in Group A of the 2021 African Basketball Championship (Afrobasket) finals slated from August 24 to September 05 in Kigali.
The Western Africans completed the Group A draw after finishing third in Group E qualifiers behind table toppers Egypt and Uganda who defeated Morocco 77-65 Thursday, July, 8, at the Salle El Bouazzaoui to book a historic third consecutive FIBA AfroBasket qualification.
The game was postponed by FIBA in February due to health-related reasons after it was reported that Uganda’s camp had several positive tests for Covid-19.
The win saw Uganda and Cape Verde joined the 14 teams that already secured their tickets to play Afrobasket 2021.
While Cape Verde completed the Group A, Uganda, also known as the Silverbacks, joined Group D alongside former African champions Senegal, Cameroon and debutants South Sudan.
The group stages, which take place on August 25-26, will see two teams from each of the four groups advance to the Knock-Out Phase (Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Finals).
The third-place game and the final will be played on September 5.
The top five teams from the competition will represent Africa to the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup slated in Japan, Philippines and Indonesia from Aug 25 to Sep 10, 2023.
