The former Minister of Environment, Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya, and the Permanent Secretary in the same ministry, Patrick Karera, are being probed over mismanagement of forestry projects, The New Times has learnt.

Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) said it had launched a probe into Mujawamariya and Karera after the former was dismissed as Minister of Public Service and Labour on Thursday, July 25.

She was the Minister of Environment from November 2019 until last month. The investigation focuses on her tenure at the environment ministry.

Mujawamariya and Karera "are currently under investigation for mismanagement of forestry conservation-related projects,” RIB spokesperson said in statement to The New Times on Thursday.

He said Karera had been "under interrogation to corroborate evidence with available information.”

"There are several other individuals who are suspected to be involved in the mismanagement,” Murangira said.

According to sources, the investigation is linked to the Huye-based Rwanda Forestry Authority.

Mujawamariya and Karera were not under arrest as investigation was ongoing, Murangira said.

The Office of the Prime Minister said Mujawamariya was dismissed from the Cabinet over "matters of accountability.”

Mujawamariya has previously served as Minister of Education, and Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, among other positions.
