EDITORIAL: It's selfish to hide one's Covid status
Tuesday, June 29, 2021

The Prime Minister’s office on Tuesday announced that effective July 1, all schools and higher education institutions are closed in some parts of the country, given the surge in Covid-19 cases and the emergence of new variants globally.

With the increase in new cases resulting in an increase in hospital admissions and the number of deaths, the new measures were inevitable.

The new measures come at a time when cases have risen sharply in recent weeks with officials associating it to multiple factors including complacency.

Experts say that they had observed the emergence of clusters which include factories and communal places where people live in big numbers and have poor ventilation.

Among the avenues that the pandemic has been spread it has emerged is from persons who intentionally refuse to self-isolate and continue about their business in the process infecting many others.

This has been the case in a few cases that have been reported whereby Rwanda National Police has apprehended suspects. In the said instances, persons who have tested positive and required to isolate at home end up going about their business as if all is well.

While the said persons will be prosecuted for knowingly passing on an infection, it goes to show selfish acts that a few are capable of that could render the fight against the pandemic useless.

It’s important that persons who test positive reveal their status to their colleagues and affiliates so that they can also get tested as well as self-isolate as adviced. Be your brothers’ (or sisters’) keeper.
