Last night the One Dollar Campaign was launched. Over USD 50,000 was raised in cash and pledges. It is hoped that within the next 100 days as we remember those that perished in the horrific Genocide against Tutsis, more pledges and donations will be realised. This will be used to construct 500 houses for children who were orphaned by the genocide. It is part of the country’s efforts to wipe the tears off these children’s faces. It is an effort to give these children hope that much as they lost their parents during that horrific period, Rwandans are with them and Rwanda is their parent. No one can replace a parent but with a little care and support, the pain can be alleviated. The significance of the One Dollar Campaign lies in numbers and the idea behind it. That even the biggest figure starts from one. If we all chip in whatever our capacities, a lot will be achieved.

If we have healthy thoughts, we shall reap healthy harvests. If we each play our role in the reconstruction of our nation, we shall surpass all expectations. That is what the One Dollar Campaign is trying to do.
We are saying that by tapping into our own resources, we can achieve so much more than waiting for external aid. There is local adage that says, "Akimuhana kaza invura ihise”….loosely translated; it simply says that when you wait for external help it usually comes too late.
Let’s not wait for external help. Put in your Rwf 500, you don’t know what that might achieve when more people chip in the same. And it’s even more rewarding when you do it with an open heart.
Be proud another fifteen years on when those orphans become responsible citizens. You never know what your one dollar will do.
