The Imbuto Foundation would like to respond to a letter sent to the Editor of The New Times, dated 24th March, by a Mr. Sam Gahima from Gikongoro.

The writer who congratulated the Foundation on its activities of advocating for girls empowerment through its ‘Rewarding Best performing Girls’ education project, also mentioned that boys don’t benefit from a similar initiative, and have no incentive to excel in school as girls do.

We would like to state that the idea behind rewarding best-performing girls is to improve on schoolgirls’ performance in seconday school, which is significantly lower than that of boys, according to current statistics from the Ministry of Education.

In essence, this initiative does not leave boys behind, but rather encourages girls to the same academic level. While we have no program specifically for boys, another aspect of the Imbuto Foundation’s education project is the scholarships program.

This program gives out academic scholarships to secondary students across the country, in an equal number between both girls and boys.
