District authorities in Burera have stepped up efforts to bring to book those dealing in drug trafficking as well as illicit drinks. After a security operation which netted some of the dealers, our sources revealed that those who arrested accused village (midugudu) leaders of being part of the illicit alcoholic trade commonly known as kanyanga.
The acting district mayor, Joseph Zaraduhaye gave a stern warning to those taking part in the illicit trade. He asked the residents to use the community policing apparatus to arrest those involved.
The swoop netted over 1,873 litres of Kanyanga and 1368 litres of chief waragi 2 kilograms of marijuana which was destroyed including.
The District Police Commander, Sup Callos Kabayiza said the trade in illicit drugs and alcohol fed directly into other criminal incidences such as domestic violence, suicide and even assault.
According to article 273, of the penal code whoever is arrested in connection with the illicit drugs is liable for a jail term of between 3 months and 5 years and a fine of Rwf.250,000.
