KARONGI — the Vice-Mayor of Karongi District who was recently arrested for allegedly defrauding the district of over Rwf. 100,000, was this week transferred to Muhanga prison in Southern province.

Jean Baptiste Hakizimana who was the District vice mayor in charge of finance and economy was last week held at Bwishyura police post.

A source from Karongi court of higher instance who spoke on condition of anonymity because he does not speak on behalf of the court, told The New Times the transfer decision was taken on Monday.

‘The court took a decision of transferring him to Muhanga Prison on Monday. He will be held in custody for a period of three months as he will start appearing before court,’ he said.

Hakizimana is accused of having received Rwf. 100,000 from the former Governor of Western Province, Penelope Kantarama, (now permanent secretary in the internal security Ministry) to repair her house but that money was never accounted for.

On February, 20 an Advisory Council meeting was held at which the district summoned Hakizimana because he had not deposited the said money on the district’s account.
