NEC announces 24 MPs to represent women in Parliament

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) on July 18 announced provisional election results for Members of Parliament (MPs) representing special interest groups; women, youth, and people with disabilities.

The 24 MPs to represent women in Parliament, according to the provisional results announced by the National Electoral Commission (NEC) on Thursday, July 18, represent 30 per cent of the 80 lawmakers in the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house.

Meanwhile, President-elect Paul Kagame secured an astounding 99.18 per cent of the presidential vote, while his closest rival, Frank Habineza of Democratic Green Party, managed only 0.50 per cent of the vote, and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana trailed with 0.32 per cent, according to the provisional results.

Two female MPs, elected from the City of Kigali, to represent women in Parliament are Phoebe Kanyange, and Donatha Gihana. In Eastern Province, Gertrude Kazarwa, Lydie Mushimiyimana, Christine Kanyandekwe, Alphonsine Mukamana, Solange Uwingabe, and Judith Mukarugwiza, are six female MPs to represent women in Parliament.

Six MPs elected from Southern Province are Francine Tumushime, Marie Claire Uwumuremyi, Sarah Kayitesi, Germaine Mukabalisa, Jeannette Uwababyeyi, and Hope Tumukunde Gasatura.

Four female MPs were elected from Northern Province. They are Olive Uwamurera, Eliane Mukarusagara, Madina Ndangiza, and Ingrid Marie Parfaite Izere; while the six elected from Western Province are Aline Ingabire, Françoise Mukandekezi, Angelique Nyirabazayire, Alice Muzana, Gloriose Sibobugingo, Salama Uwamurera.

Meanwhile, according to the results, Vanessa Umuhoza Gashumba and Venuste Icyitegetsi were elected as MPs to represent the youth.

Olivia Mbabazi, was elected as an MP to represent persons with disabilities.

The electoral commission will release final results for presidential and parliamentary elections before July 27.

According to a December 2023 Presidential Order relating to elections of the President and Deputies, the distribution of seats for 24 female MPs elected by specific organs in accordance with the national administrative entities is based on the number of the population of each Province and the City of Kigali. The Presidential Order provides that four seats are allotted to Northern Province, six seats to Southern Province, six to Eastern Province; six to Western Province, while the City of Kigali gets two seats.

Regarding composition, it indicates that the electoral college consists of members of the Executive Committee of National Women Council from the village level to the national level; and members of Sector Councils of the electoral constituency; Members of Councils of Districts of the Province, or members of the Council of the City of Kigali.
