Multi-instrumentalist and singer Majnun will headline a live concert alongside Rwanda’s Samy Kamanzi, Kaya Byinshii, Impakanizi and Michael Makembe on July 20, at Kigali Cultural and Exhibition Village.
The concert is being organised by Rwanda Arts Initiative in partnership with Isaano and Africa in Colors.
The musician has been performing in theatre plays in Rwanda but this will be his first concert which is part of a tour of a music-led project dubbed "Hewa Rwanda” by Dorcy Rugamba.
Majnun's proficiency as a musician is demonstrated by his ability to combine many musical genres with a combination of traditional and modern elements by drawing influence from traditional Senegalese music.
"Music lovers should come and witness a different music experience, by a great artist, routes of the amazing Senegalese music, and home to great artists on the continent.
"His music genre and that of our local Gakondo music artists, will definitely be a great fusion and experience one would want to experience,” Raoul Rugamba, one of the event organisers told The new Times.
The singer is commonly known for songs like "Bussura," "Mandala," "Begue Yaye," "O Koulok," and "Tell me” among others.
Tickets for the concert are on sale at Rwf 10,000.
About Majnun
Real names Djibril Sarr, Majnun is simply a charismatic and inspired artist. His name, which means "the mad man" in Arabic, is a deliberate choice.
Originally from Senegal, he grew up in an environment where art was omnipresent. Music, theater, and literature are disciplines he has been exposed to from a very young age. He thus took his first steps in Hip-Hop. But the encounter with the guitar was the real starting point of a quest that later led him to become a multi-instrumentalist.
Over the years, Majnun has strived to develop a resolutely eclectic art, in keeping with his nomadic condition. Afro-beat, jazz, funk, trance, and Latin music are now the different colors that make up his musical fresco.
Endowed with a rich stage experience, he produced and released his first album in 2015, and also participated in numerous artistic collaborations. In 2019, after 19 years spent in France, Majnun organized a tour in West Africa with his band "The Black-Magic Sofas Sofas". Benin, Mali, and Senegal were the stages of this tour entitled the "Decolonial Tour".
