RUSIZI — In a bid to control cases of trauma among genocide survivors in Rusizi district during the forthcoming genocide commemoration period, 94 residents have been trained in various trauma counseling services in the district.

The one-day training workshop took place on Sunday at Centre Pastoral Incuti in Kamembe sector. The trainees were drawn from all cells across the district.

The workshop was organized by the management of Rusizi district in collaboration with officials from Avega and IBUKA in the district.

Emmanuel Nsengiyumva one of the trainers called upon the participants to encourage genocide survivors to have strength during this year’s genocide commemoration week as part of providing support within their locations.

The trainees were advised to be as close as they can to genocide survivors during the commemoration week in order to assist them.

"Many genocide survivors have been facing trauma during genocide commemoration period. However  I encourage every individual who is attending this trauma counseling workshop to replicate lessons learnt to offer support to these survivors during this year’s genocide commemoration  period”.

Nsengiyumva urged the trainees.

The participants were further asked to  mobilize and sensitize residents in general to avoid genocide ideology and ethnic discrimination cases during the commemoration.

One Dinar Mukamurigo who was among the trainees said, "I thank the management of Rusizi district and our government in general for having organized this workshop because this has given  us ample  knowledge and skills necessary for the purposes of confronting and controlling  cases of trauma during the incoming genocide commemoration ”.
