The 2009 national ruby league commences today with two games on cards.

Simba host 2007 league champions Gorilla while Sharks, who have strengthened their squad with a couple of new players are expected to give last year’s league runners up Kaduha Tigers.

Defending champions Remera Buffaloes kick-start their campaign for a second consecutive rugby league title when they host a rejuvenated UNR Grizzlies at Red Cross grounds this Sunday.

After pulling off home and away wins against the varsity side last season, Buffaloes’ coach-player Gerard Nsenga is upbeat about a possible repeat.

"We are ready for the league. We will do what we do best,” Nsenga remarked.

Although Buffaloes were not very active in are the transfer market during the off-season, Gerard reckons that they have beefed up the side of with a couple youngsters.

"Last season, we had a couple of youngsters coming up with the ranks so some have moved up into the senior squad,” he said.

Buffaloes however have to do without influential prop Benjamin Makombe who is busy with work. The other day’s game pits two-time champions Lion de Fer with Puma at Rugunga grounds.
