Rwanda will host the third edition of the IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlon competition scheduled for August 4 in Rubavu District, Western Province.
Organised by Global Events Africa, the one-day elite triathlon tournament is set to attract participants coming from over 15 countries across the globe.

Unveiling the third edition of the race in Kigali on Monday, July 8, representatives from the Ministry of Sports, host city Rubavu District, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), and Global Events Africa discussed the progress of the preparations as well as the impact it has brought to Rwandan tourism since it come in Rwanda in 2022.
Niyonkuru Zephanie, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, highlighted the economic and sporting benefits of the competition as a platform to market the country to the world through the global coverage it gets from international media agencies.
"We use sports events to promote tourism in our country. Last year, tourism revenue increased by 59%, with $13 million generated from sports activities we hosted. Additionally, Rwandans excelled in the competition."
According to Global Events Africa CEO Bonita Mutoni, the third edition of Ironman 70.3 will be more than just a triathlon race as organisers and partners look to create a networking platform for participants and the business community.
"We are well prepared to host the tournament for the third time. This year, there will be an exhibition that will facilitate business opportunities, attracting many people interested in what Rwanda has to offer," Mutoni told the press.
According to Alex Mbaraga, the president of the local Triathlon governing body, Rwandan athletes are undergoing stringent training sessions to prepare well for the race, although 2023 outstanding performer Héritier Ishimwe remains a doubt. Ishimwe at the time qualified for the World Triathlon Championships.
Participants in the IRONMAN 70.3 race will cover 90 kilometers by bicycle, 21.1 kilometers on foot, and 1.9 kilometers swimming in Lake Kivu.
