Independent presidential candidate Philippe Mpayimana who first contested for the presidency in 2017, and failed, shared his motivation for the second attempt, during a press conference on July 9.

He expressed his "deep commitment” to Rwanda's development and the desire to contribute meaningfully to the country's transformation journey.

"Many people wonder why I entered politics and why I’m running for president again. My journey started in 2016, after publishing my book &039;Only Forward Looking.' After spending 18 years in exile, I witnessed Rwanda's path towards transformation and wanted to be part of the development,” he said.

Mpayimana emphasized that his decision to run is driven by a vision of Rwanda's potential.

"When you look at Rwanda's progress, you see a nation on the path to a better transformation. Those who view it otherwise only see a lack of democracy and a worse side of Rwanda but I want to make sure that Rwanda continues on this positive path and doesn't stray from it because I know that I am able and willing to keep Rwanda on this path.”

One of Mpayimana's main inspirations was Agaciro Development Fund, Rwanda's sovereign wealth fund that was initiated by Rwandans in December 2011 during the nineth Umushyikirano. It sparked a realization in him that even the toughest challenges can be overcome, he said.

"It inspired me to take action and contribute to solving issues facing our nation,” he said.

Reflecting on his first presidential run in 2017, where he garnered one per cent of the votes, Mpayimana noted there were now significant changes in public perception and engagement.

"In 2017, there was scepticism about other candidates running for president. Many [people] believed there was no space for competition. However, I demonstrated that anyone could campaign and run for the presidency. Now, local leaders and other people are more open to hearing diverse perspectives," he said.

‘Elections empower us to shape our nation's future’

Mpayimana expressed confidence in this year's election, believing that Rwandans now better understand the democratic process.

"Elections empower us to shape our nation's future. By voting according to candidates' promises, we assume the responsibility of creating a brighter tomorrow. Returning now, I aim to continue assessing public engagement in voting based on campaign pledges,” he said.

"I am encouraged by the increasing participation in campaigns, which reflects ongoing change. I firmly believe this will be reflected in the final outcomes.”

Mpayimana said that his primary focus is on encouraging Rwandans to participate in the country's development and to understand their ability to lead.

"Last time, not a lot of people voted for me, but I hope they now realize that democracy is about their choice through elections. I know I will not get just one per cent again because my understanding and general knowledge about the country and my capabilities have grown and all this was shown through campaigns.”
