NGORORERO — Gatumba mining concessions (GMC) an extraction firm operating in the western province has  hired more than two hundred employees at its current working sites as part of its efforts at boosting the livelihoods of the local residents. More than eighty percent of the employees are area residents.

The Minister of State for Environment and Mines, Mr. Vincent Karega, says this is a big opportunity for local residents to further boost their social wellbeing. He added that the mining venture is an out come of the country’s commitment of creating an enabling environment for investors in order to contribute to the country’s development.

According to Claude Munyemana 43, one of the employees at GMC, the firm  has made positive impacts on his family welfare. With a monthly salary he gets from GMC, he adequately takes care of his entire family of four including fully catering for their education needs. ‘GMC is a leading provider of jobs and by extension critical lifelines in this sector,’ he says.

She is also positive about the impact of GMC on the local residents. ‘I have managed to buy a small plot of land for my family. This is a great achievement to me,’ she says.

The South African mining Company, currently at its research phase, has made its foray into  the local mining industry in Rwanda at a time when operators largely employ outdated  mining technologies.

However, the new technology being introduced within the mining industry  by GMC will go a long way in stimulating the industry’s growth prospects.
