How to make the most of the festive season
Thursday, December 24, 2020

This year has been altered on so many levels that the holidays too feel different. With a ban on social gatherings, most people are bound to have their celebrations at home and this may require extra effort in bringing holiday cheer. However, irrespective of how different the celebrations are, there are simple ways to make this festive season one to remember.

Decorate for holiday cheer

There is something about Christmas décor that brings joy. The beams, Christmas trees and string lights are what welcome in the holiday season. Since you will be home mostly, choose to decorate immensely as a festive way of spreading joy for you and the neighbourhood. Of course there is the Christmas tree, bells, candy, ribbons and all the glitter you can have to make your place as cheerful as you can.

Form new traditions

For many, celebrating the festive season translates to doing the same things year after year. Chances are high though that what you do this year is different from the past years. If celebrating meant coming together as a whole family to celebrate together, or travelling out of the country for the festivities, this year, celebrations could mean having a few family members around to share a meal with. This shouldn’t kill the festive vibe, rather, appreciate even the little you have to celebrate since it’s these little things that matter anyway.

Spend it with the needy

Make this festive season merry by spending it with those in need. You can choose to visit a kids’ home or offer your time and support to women’s shelter. Sharing a meal or giving them food and drinks can be all you need to spread some cheer this holiday season. It is such small acts of kindness that make the holiday season cheerful.

Watch movies as a family

Since celebrations for this year are bound to be indoors mostly, celebrating Christmas or New Year’s Day while watching movies does not sound like a bad idea after all. Put together a list of your favourite movies, but make sure that your selection is fit for the entire family to watch together. You can choose to accompany your movie time with ice-cream or snacks, as you get cosy with making new memories for this peculiar festive season.

Plan for a barbeque

Regardless of the pandemic overshadowing the festivities, try a barbeque for a unique holiday celebration this year. After all, what is a celebration without meat! Gather your family and friends and light up your grill, roast meat as you share drinks. Playing music in the background can make it even more fun. However, keep it small as a way to safe from the pandemic.

Organise a game and karaoke night

You can choose to have game nights together as a family. This is always fun, especially that all people whether young or old, can easily mingle and connect on this. Better still, do a karaoke night where everyone gets to sing their favourite songs. Drink and eat as you create memories for years to come.
