AS Kigali defender Jean Paul Ahoyikuye, Alia’s Mukonya, has passed away after a pitch accident collision with another player, the club announced on Saturday.

The incident occurred on the Saturday afternoon, July 6, in Mageragere when Mukonya reportedly collided with a goalkeeper and subsequently fell on the ground.

"With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of our player Jean Paul Ahoyikuye a.k.a Mukonya who passed away Saturday morning. His legacy on and off the field will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace,” the club announced on Saturday.

According to sources, he swallowed his tongue during the incident and was unable to recover.

He was rushed to CHUK hospital for emergency treatment before doctors confirmed that he had died.
