MATIMBA - An unknown gunman on Saturday night attacked a family in Matimba, in Eastern Province, killing five of its members.

Police spokesperson, John Uwamungu said the assailant stormed the family of Francois Kalindintwari and shot dead his wife, Valerie Nishimwe and four children.

"We have started investigating. I want to assure all people that the culprit will be arrested,” Uwamungu said by phone yesterday.

The assailant struck when the family was having dinner.
During the attack, the assailant seriously injured Kalindintwali, 40, his son and a housemaid, with a baby escaping unharmed, according to police.

"The child who escaped unhurt was asleep,” Uwamungu said.

In a related incident, police have announced that they have apprehended the killers of businessman, Michael Shyaka, 30, who was murdered a fortnight ago in a staccato of bullets on his way home.

Two days after the incident, police apprehended two suspects, one of them a soldier believed to have been hired to kill Shyaka.

"The suspects have even confessed that they killed Shaka. It was something to do with competition in business,” Uwamungu revealed.
