Musanze is dubbed Rwanda’s "nerve centre” for tourism.
It is blessed with eye catching attractions. The main base for Gorilla tracking, Musanze is a small but bustling market town situated 15km from the base of the Virunga Volcanoes. 

You might have heard of many tales regarding  Karisimbi, the highest peak of Virunga Volcanoes, if you go to Musanze, you will see it in addition to Muhabura, Bisoke and Sabyinyo the other peaks.

Musanze has a memorable setting at the base of the Virungas. On the outskirts of the town, the natural bridge at Musanze - a solidified lava flow - is a fascinating relic of the volcanic activity that shaped this scenic area.

Nearby are the lovely Lakes Burera, Ruhondo and Karago. It’s wonderfully set, and has excellent range of affordable hotels; Musanze is an agreeable place to spend the night before one goes gorilla tracking.

Many love Gorilla tracking in Musanze, others prefer mountain climbing. It’s a two days trek to get to the top of Karisimbi. Trekking through the Virunga brings you too close to nature.

The trail takes you through the national park, rainforest, alive with the calls of colourful birds and chattering of the rare golden monkey, and littered with fresh spoor of the mountains’ elusive buffalos and elephants.

How to get there

Being connected to Kigali by a tarmac road, it’s easier to reach Musanze since it’s just a 2 hr drive from Kigali. The road to Musanze is also scenic because of its turns and twists. For those who are into exploring, try road transport. You can also access Musanze by air.

Affordable accommodation

While in Musanze, one has options of where to spend the night since it has various places at pocket friendly prices. Sabyinyo Silverback has a capacity of 16 bedrooms and a magnificent view of the Virunga.

Located on a hilltop between Lakes Burela and Ruhondo, the Virunga volcanoes Luxury Lodge the best view of the twin lakes and Virunga range.

The EER Guest House is also good and medium when it comes to prices. To mention but a few are Kinigi guest house and Muhabura hotel.

Buffet food, snacks and fruits are served in these hotels however the special roasted Irish potatoes can only be found in Musanze. They are served with pork or roasted beef.

When you chose to explore Musanze, none of your time will be unoccupied for many activities will be available for you to do. The likes of cave exploring, golden monkey tracking, gorilla tracking, mountain trekking name it. Spare a weekend and enjoy what nature has for you.
