CONSULTATION ON MEDIA LAW OF GREAT IMPORTANCE

On Friday March 20, the Minister of Information, Louise Mushikiwabo held discussions with representatives of the media and other stakeholders in the industry. The importance of involving all stakeholders in discussing and “cleaning up” the media law that was recently passed by parliament is relevant. Many journalists have expressed reservations about some sections in the proposed law. This is understandable since they are well positioned to know how they go about their business. The media practitioners should contribute positively to the debate so that by the time President Paul Kagame signs the law, there will be a win- win situation for all.

On Friday March 20, the Minister of Information, Louise Mushikiwabo held discussions with representatives of the media and other stakeholders in the industry.

The importance of involving all stakeholders in discussing and "cleaning up” the media law that was recently passed by parliament is relevant.

Many journalists have expressed reservations about some sections in the proposed law. This is understandable since they are well positioned to know how they go about their business.

The media practitioners should contribute positively to the debate so that by the time President Paul Kagame signs the law, there will be a win- win situation for all.

In the same respect, all stakeholders ought to realise that the laws of any land are derived from customs and other realities unique to that land.

Therefore, the media law in Rwanda cannot necessarily be the same in all aspects as in other countries.  Thus all involved parties have to understand the unique history of Rwanda and the role of the media in the same.

The law once finalised and gazetted, will be a positive contribution to the development of the industry. The requirement that there be more training and having more professionals in the media will help to streamline the industry.

At the same time, it should be noted that the media is a platform for serious intellectual debate and analysis. This means that it has to be taken seriously since it compliments the work of national leaders and in some instances provides alternative points of view which can be adopted to the  national benefit.
