RDF and Eastern Province team up against domestic violence

In a bid to combat domestic violence against children and women Eastern Province has teamed up with RDF in collaboration with UNIFEM to sensitize and lay strategies to fight gender-based violence.

During the opening of the seminar Governor Theoneste Mutsindashayka, said that Eastern and Northern Province were leading the country in the crimes.

Mutsindashyka revealed that after training the participants would have to train others and organize themselves into groups from province level up to village level and mobilize residents against domestic violence through public dialogue.

"Nyagatare district is leading in the whole of Eastern Province [in these crimes.]” he said.

"The main cause of domestic violence is drunkenness and ignorance about property rights and greed.”

The Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) have also turned its guns in the fight against domestic violence. Captain Aimable Mushabe said talk was the way to go.

"We have to first have training of trainers and then we have a plan to apply public dialogue approach in both locals and in the army.”
