ALTHOUGH Jean Baptist Hakizimana has confirmed his participation in the lucrative Kenya Open, Emmanuel Ruterana’s involvement remains a doubt.
Ruterana who recently parted ways with his long-time sponsors BCR is worried that he could miss out on the prestigious package at stake in the Open.
"Competing in a tournament of this magnitude requires a lot of input financially. I need about $1200 which I don’t have,” the 27-year-old said.
Hakizimana on the other hand is relishing his chances at the four-day event. The MTN sponsored golfer, who turns 20 this year is already perfecting his swing and putting at Kigali Golf Club.
"I’m going to play against top quality golfers so I need to be ready for the challenge,” he reckoned.
However, should Ruterana take part, he will be looking to add to his impressive display in last Saturday’s Captains’ Prize tournament in Uganda.
Ruterana grossed 143 at the two-day event, beating his closest challenger Herman Mutaawe by three-strokes.
Kenya Open, which is part of the European Challenge Tour, is scheduled for April 16-19 at Muthaiga Golf Club in Kenya.
The event is valued at Ksh.12m (approx. Frw 100m).
Uganda will be represented by Gerald Ayella and Amos Kamya.
The pair scooped the country’s two slots that were up for grabs after returning convincing scores of 140 and 141 in a 36-hole qualifying event held at the par-72 Uganda Golf Club Kitante course recently.
