Your very first day of work is crucial, as your first impression can set the tone for how your boss and your co-workers see you.
From figuring out what to wear, to trying to learn the ropes, all the while making a good first impression on your colleagues, your first day at a new job can be daunting.
Doreen Mutesi, a procurement officer, says being friendly is one of the easiest ways to impress at a new job.
"The first day presents many opportunities to talk to people, which you should make good use of. Don’t make the interaction more about you but use the chance to get to know what they do and what they like,” she says.
Showing interest in knowing more about the person you’re talking to, she explains, makes you instantly more likable than the person who just wants to talk about themselves. It’s important to show your co-workers that you’re excited to meet them.
Richard Kagarama, a marketing officer, says the first days are also an opportunity to get the information needed to carry out your tasks correctly than to learn the hard way that you’re doing something wrong.
"There is so much to learn as a new hire. From what your duties entail to the organisational work system, all this new information can feel overwhelming, but don’t be afraid to ask questions to gain clarity when you need it.
"No one would expect you to be perfect when you are new to a job, and no one expects you to know everything about the organisation right away either, so don’t be afraid to ask,” he says.
Also important, he adds, is to show initiative by doing your own research about the company and your role before making suggestions that might come off as not understanding your position or the organisation.
Dress the part
Mutesi also believes that what you wear on the first day of work is equally important because it reflects how comfortable and confident you feel.
For him, the more comfortable and confident you feel, the more likely you will be able to concentrate on your work duties and perform your best.
"When contemplating your first day of work outfit, your first step should be the company website and social media pages. Find out if your new company is business casual or business formal?
"Most people tend to over dress yet some organisations are more laid back and casual wear is the norm. You need to dress accordingly and ensure that your outfit is appropriate for your new job,” she says.
When in doubt, she adds, always lean towards the side of formal for your first day of work, for it’s better to be a little too formal than too casual.
