Here are some shows to enjoy while you relax at home.

Top Boy

A British drama, ‘Top Boy’ shows the story of Ra’nell played by Ashley Walters a boy navigating the dangerous Summerhouse estate after his mother is hospitalised. Under the care of his mother’s friend, Ra’nell helps a pregnant friend grow cannabis to escape the estate, while his best friend Gem gets entangled with local drug dealers Dushane and Sully.

As Dushane and Sully face internal and external threats, including rival dealers and police, their partnership is tested. Later, Dushane returns from Jamaica to rebuild his empire, facing new competition from Jamie. The series culminates in a violent power struggle, leading to Jamie’s death by Sully, who then takes over but faces betrayal and is ultimately killed.

The show looks at the harsh realities of life in crime-ridden areas and the struggle for survival and power.

Emily in Paris

‘Emily in Paris’, a Netflix series starring Lily Collins, follows Emily Cooper, an American from Chicago with a Master’s degree in communications, who moves to Paris for a new job opportunity. She is tasked with bringing an American point of view and social media presence to a venerable French marketing firm. Cultures clash as she adjusts to the challenges of life in Paris while juggling her career, new friendships, and active love life. The show is a romantic comedy with four seasons.

Atlanta

The show stars Donald Glover and follows Earn, a young man living in Atlanta, Georgia. Earn is trying to redeem himself in the eyes of his ex-girlfriend Van, who is the mother of his daughter Lottie, as well as his parents and his cousin Alfred, who is a rapper known as ‘Paper Boi’.

Earn dropped out of Princeton University and has no money or home, so he moves between staying with his parents and his ex-girlfriend. When Earn sees that his cousin is about to become famous, he tries to reconnect with him to improve his own life and provide a better future for his daughter.

The show, which premiered in 2016, has four seasons and is a good watch with a 98 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Bear

First released in 2022, ‘The Bear’ stars Jeremy Allen White as a young chef named Carmy. Coming from the fine dining world, Carmy returns to Chicago to run his family’s sandwich shop after a tragic death in the family. He struggles with the tough realities of running a small business, managing a stubborn kitchen staff, and dealing with strained family relationships, all while coping with his brother’s suicide.

As Carmy works to improve the shop and himself, he forms a close bond with his rough-around-the-edges kitchen crew, who become his chosen family.

With only two seasons, the show is arguably one of the best.

Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty directed by Pete Michels follows Rick Sanchez, a quirky and alcoholic mad scientist who returns after being missing for nearly 20 years and moves in with his daughter Beth and her family.

Beth is happy to have him, but her husband Jerry is not. Rick frequently takes his 14-year-old grandson, Morty, on wild adventures across the universe, often putting them in danger. Morty is a kind but easily stressed boy, while his 17-year-old sister, Summer, is a typical teenager concerned with her social status but occasionally joins their adventures.

Derry Girls

‘Derry Girls’ is a British comedy that centres on Erin Quinn and her cousin Orla along with their friends Clare, Michelle, and Michelle’s English cousin James as they navigate their teenage years in Derry during the final years of the Troubles. Attending a Catholic girls’ secondary school, the group often finds themselves in hilariously absurd situations, set against the backdrop of political unrest and cultural divides of the era.
