Skipper Ally Serumogo is optimistic that his side SC Kiyovu has ‘the best chance’ to end their long way for a league title next season.

Kiyovu have not been crowned Rwanda Premier League champions in the last 27 years – an unbearable wait for a club that clinched four championships between 1983 and 1993.

The Green Baggies also won the league title in 1969 and 1971.

After making big name signings in the ongoing transfer window, Serumogo believes his team will be among the league’s top contenders come the 2020/21 campaign that gets underway on October 30.

"Our mind is placed on winning the league title. With the current squad, I think we have got the best chance [in a long time] to finally end this wait,” said Serumogo, who, in May, extended his contract with the Mumema-based side for another two years – until 2022.

The domestic topflight league will get underway on Friday, October 30, while the final match-day is slated for Thursday, May 20, 2021.

Though Serumogo does not want to put unnecessary pressure on his teammates, he has urged them to step up their game.

"For so long, we were more of participants than contenders in the league. We cannot afford to be participants again in the coming season. It is obviously going to be a tough mission, we will have to work for it from the first day until the very last.”

Kiyovu, who finished in fifth position last season, have signed Nigerian striker Samson Babua from Sunrise and Burundi-born forward Abeddy Bigirimana, goalkeeper Yves Kimenyi and left-back Eric Irambona from Rayon Sports as well as Omar Ngandu from AS Kigali.

The club also signed Rwanda football legend OlivierKarekezi as their head coach.
