Rwanda National Police on Monday, August 10 confirmed the death of one of two detainees who was shot dead as he attempted to escape from a detention centre in Ndera Sector, Gasabo District.
The deceased, Dominique Ndahimana, was a 30-year-old suspected drug dealer who was shot on spot by a police officer while Jean-Claude Niyigena, a burglary suspect, is still on the run.
Ndahimana was in custody after he was arrested with 79 portions of cannabis while Niyigena was a suspect of burglary.
According to the police spokesperson, CP John Bosco Kabera, the incident took place around 7.30 am as the two tried to escape the detention centre.
"They attempted to escape from the detention centre when they were, along with other detainees, allowed to go to the toilet in the morning,” Kabera told The New Times in a telephone interview.
Ndahimana and Niyigena were among suspects detained at Ndera detention centre and were yet to be presented before court to be charged for their offences.
Ndahimana was immediately taken to the forensic laboratory for post-mortem examinations while the police are still searching for Niyigena who is on the run.
