Former AS Kigali coach Jean de Dieu Mateso has joined Rayon Sports as one of Guy Bukasa's backroom staff for the 2020/21 Rwanda Premier League.
Mateso, who also played for Rayon, rejoins the club after spending the last eight years at AS Kigali where he served as assistant coach and occasionally as interim head coach.
As interim coach, Mateso guided AS Kigali to the 2019 Peace Cup glory after beating SC Kiyovu 2-1 in the final. The triumph sealed the Nyamirambo-based side a ticket to the 2019/20 Caf Confederation Cup where they bowed out from the first round.
However, surprisingly, AS Kigali confirmed last month that the club would not extend his contract as former Rwanda international Djabir Mutarambirwa was signed as his replacement.
Speaking to this publication on Friday, one Rayon Sports official, who preferred to remain unnamed, confirmed Mateso’s signing.
"Mateso played for us and over the years also proved to be a good coach, we are happy to have him on our technical bench. [Hope] he will be of great help in bringing trophies to the club.”
Besides the 2019 Peace Cup, Mateso also helped AS Kigali to the 2013 and 2019 Super Cup titles, both at the expense of Rayon.
He will closely work with Guy Bakila as assistant coaches to Guy Bukasa who was signed from Gasogi United last month.
