At least five Malian soldiers are dead and five more are wounded after "terrorists" attacked an army outpost on Sunday, the government army said in a statement.

The country's military has said its forces were the subject of a complex terrorist attack on Sunday, August 2, at around 12:30 p.m.

As noted in a tweet by the military, the twin attacks "by terrorists" happened between camps of Gomacoura and Diabaly.

"During this attack, the FAMa (Malian military) recorded a provisional toll of 5 dead, 5 injured and vehicles destroyed. On the enemy side, no assessment is yet available. Reinforcement has been dispatched there," tweeted the army.

Reports indicate that a military convoy was ambushed en route from the village of Goma-Coura to Diabaly town on Sunday.

An ambush on a military convoy blamed on militants also left 24 soldiers dead on June 15.

Mali has suffered jihadist violence and ethnic rivalries since 2012, when Islamist militants took over the north of the country.

The crisis has since spread and affected the centre of the Sahel country and also impacts neighbours Burkina Faso and Niger.

Last November, at least 53 soldiers and a civilian were killed in an attack on a military post in northeast Mali.

The attack, one of the deadliest against Malian forces, took place in the Menaka region close to the border with Niger.

At the time, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) armed group claimed responsibility for the attack.
