Rwanda, on Sunday, July 26, confirmed 69-nine new coronavirus cases, of which fifty were from the neighbourhoods under lockdown.

Among the new cases identified from neighbourhoods under lockdown, 34 were in Kigali, 16 from Nyamasheke whereas 16 cases were traced from contacts of previously confirmed positives in Rusizi. Three districts: Kirehe, Ngoma and Rwamagana recorded a new case each.

According to the Ministry of Health, the new figures brought the tally of Covid-19 confirmed cases to 1,821 of which 918 have recovered including 11 discharged from different Covid-19 treatment centres in the last twenty-four hours.

The pandemic has claimed the lives of five people in Rwanda, two of whom being peacekeepers serving on a UN mission.

Sunday results were drawn from 4,122 sample tests conducted in the last twenty-four hours. In total, the country has conducted 242,129 Covid-19 sample tests.

In a bid to further contain the pandemic in the country, Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) announced that community health workers will soon be engaged in the coronavirus treatment process.

This development, according to RBC, was adopted due to the significant role played by the community health workers in reducing Malaria deaths in the country.

These community health workers have reduced malaria deaths by 60%, according to the statistics issued by RBC.

The coronavirus global track indicates that 16 million people have been infected by the virus, around 10 million have recovered and more than half a million have succumbed to the pandemic.
