EDITORIAL: Only people like the 57 clean prisoners understand the Rwandan psyche

Rwanda National Police sometimes defies logic compared to other police forces in many places. It is not every day that you will find nicely dressed, clean cut members of several armed groups captured somewhere like in the Congo paraded before the media.

That is what happened this week when 57 former members of armed groups were shown to the press prior to being formally charged. They wore smart new clothes, were cleanly shaven and they observed social distancing and had clean face masks.

They looked nothing like people who had been plucked out of the jungle and they were only betrayed by the handcuffs.

They face a myriad of charges ranging from terrorism, conspiracy to topple a legitimate government, murder, looting as well as being members of armed groups.

We know what befalls people in similar situations in some countries, even the so-called champions of democracy. Water boarding and "renditions” were not invented in Africa and it would have been even easier to just let the prisoners die in isolation, Covid-19 would have been a plausible excuse.

No, instead they were shown to the world, evidence that they were healthy and well-taken of and giving assurances that they would get their day in court.

Perhaps that is something to ponder for all those who have turned it their business to criticize Rwanda every step of the way – especially regarding human rights – that Gacaca courts tried over one million people for taking part in the Genocide of an equal or more number of innocent people who never had their day in court.

That is why, all those critics will always struggle to understand the Rwandan psyche, it is found in no textbook.
