Rwanda has recorded the 4th death from Covid-19 on Saturday July 11.

The deceased, according to the Ministry of Health is a 78 year old man. No further details on the victims have been made public yet.

This means that to date, 3 men and one woman have succumbed to the virus since March when the first case was reported in the country.

The first three deaths included a truck driver who lived in a neighbouring country and only returned to Rwanda in critical condition before he succumbed.

The second and third deaths were armed personnel serving on Rwandan peacekeeping contingents abroad and they include a 24-year-old policewoman and a Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) officer, who was 51 and had an underlying medical condition, according to the health ministry.

Meanwhile, the ministry's latest daily update for Saturday indicated that the country recorded 47 new cases of people infected with the virus from the 4,060 tests done in a period of 24 hours.

The new cases comprise 43 people from Kigali (including those in the Kigali Transit Centre cluster), 2 from Nyamasheke District, and one from Rusizi District.

On the same day, medics reported 28 new recoveries from the virus and those who recovered were released from different treatment centres where they were being treated.

Saturday's numbers take the total confirmed cases of infections in the country to 1,299, of these, the active cases are 632 while recoveries are now at 663.

In its effort to fight the virus, Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) is looking into plans to take random testing to other provinces of the country after the same was carried out in Kigali in the past few days.

The first phase of random testing was concluded on Friday in Kigali, where people from various parts of the city were tested.

About 5,000 people were tested in last week's exercise in Kigali.
