NGOMA — With just hardly 2 weeks remaining to the 15th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis, Ngoma district has launched a campaign aimed at raising money for roofing houses of the vulnerable survivors who still lack  houses.

The district has 425 Genocide survivors’ families still lacking shelter. During the launch yesterday, at least Rwf5.3 m was raised in a fundraising drive organised at the district headquarters.

Rwf3.5 million was contributed by the district workers, while Rwf1.8 million was collected from the entrepreneurs operating within the district.

About Rwf.94m will be required to buy iron sheets for all the houses.

Charles Ntageruka, the district Vice Mayor in-charge of Finance and Economic development, who presided over the campaign, said the move was seen as better way to speed up the resettlement of the survivors- instead of waiting for the government intervention.

"We cannot wait for the government when there are other measures to somehow sort out this problem,” he said.

"These people are our parents, brothers and sisters and above all our fellow citizens and its better to give out what you have to help them,” he added.

By press time, the fundraising had been extended to encompass even  secondary and primary schools in the district.
