Rwandan hip-hop artiste, Grace DaQueen has been off the music scene for quite some years now. 

The singer, real name Grace Muhawenimana, who had launched her music career in 2010 threw in the towel to focus on raising her family and venture into farming in Zambia where she is currently based.

This was until recently when she surprised her fans with a new song, "Hope” that features fellow rapper Jay Polly. 

According to the DaQueen, the song was in no way unplanned for as she had no intentions of returning to the music scene any time soon.

"I had come to Rwanda for holiday with my children but we couldn’t travel back as planned because all flights had been can-celled. As I went to Kibagabaga Hospital, I met a five year old girl  only identified as Gaudance, who had been abandoned at the hospital at birth, due to a disability problem.

As a mother of two, her story broke my heart because I couldn’t imagine how a mother could give birth and just abandon her child. Immediately I got a paper and pen and began writing a song about how the child feels,” Da Queen explained.  

"Later I thought of working with Jay Polly because I love his music and we did the song with hopes that it will touch Rwan-dans, especially mothers but also if by any chance, the child can get to meet the mother again,” she added. 

On a happy note, the singer added that the song, which was released a week ago, has already touched many people, that a family from Canada, who heard the story are making plans to adopt the child.

The video of the song, she also noted, is under production and will be released any time soon.

Releasing more songs

As many have been speculating, DeQueen also shared that she is also in the studio recording other songs that she hopes will re-launch her return to music.

"I have always loved music and I don’t see why I should give it up yet technology has made it simple to record your music even when your producer is far from you. My next song will be a love song but I hope to do more songs based on true stories because people need to know about them,” she said.

She added that the fact the country lacks more female rappers is reason enough for her to return to the music scene.

"It’s been years since I joined the music industry and ever since, the female artistes I started with are still the ones up to date. There is a strong need for more females in our music industry. I hope that I can inspire talented female rappers out there to join us,” she noted.
